Be Honest on what You Can Deliver
“Undersell and over deliver” is classic advice from marketing school 101. If you consistently blow clients away with your service, it’s like a golden ticket to a growing business. It can be tempting to take on more to really impress your customers, but sticking to what you know is a good way to present yourself as an expert in your field, deliver consistent and quality results and build trust in your customers. But when we are seeking to grow, it can be easy to bite of more than you can chew or really bend over backwards to do extra things in an attempt to make and keep more customers.

Here’s why that can backfire in spectacular ways:
- It’s a really frustrating experience for a client when a professional they hired doesn’t follow through with the things they had promised and they might not come back, let alone tell anyone to come check out what you have to offer. They may even do the opposite and tell others to avoid you if they were really disappointed.
- You can burn yourself out trying to do so much at once. It’s important to keep your long term goals in mind, and giving up probably isn’t one of them. If you’re always trying to do things that you don’t usually handle, and a customer doesn’t show extra appreciation you could even start resenting the people you are serving!
- There may even be legal ramifications for you if you have to answer to a regulatory board if you don’t deliver on what you promised a customer. Even if you had the best of intentions and were just trying to do someone a favor, this could really come back to haunt you if you step out of your professional scope.
